1 Economic Systems I will: identify parts of the 3 basic economy types and examples of countries for each We will: Identify and correctly label descriptions of each

2 Terms to know… Scarcity – having seemingly unlimited human wants and needs in a world of limited resources Resources – goods or services used to produce consumer products. (land, labor and capital) Customs – an action or way of behaving that is usual and traditional among the people in a particular group or place Free Enterprise – economic system in which private business operates in competition and largely free of state control.

3 Economic Systems An economic system describes how a country’s economy is organized. because of the problem of scarcity, every country needs a system to determine how to use its productive resources An economic system must answer three (3) basic questions…

4 Economic Systems WHAT TO PRODUCE? HOW TO PRODUCE? FOR WHOM TO PRODUCE?
What kinds of goods and services should be produced? HOW TO PRODUCE? What productive resources are used to produce goods and services? FOR WHOM TO PRODUCE? Who gets to have the goods and services? The way a society answers these questions determines its economic system.

5 Four Types of Economic Systems:
1. Traditional Economy 2. Command Economy 3. Market Economy 4. Mixed Economy (Market + Command)

6 Traditional Economy Definition: an economic system in which economic decisions are based on customs, ritual, habit and beliefs

7 Traditional Economy Characteristics: People will make what they always have made and will do the same work their parents did. exchange of goods is done through bartering (trading without using money)

8 Traditional Economy Who decides what to produce?
people follow their customs and make what their ancestors made Who decides how to produce goods & services? people grow & make things the same way that their ancestors did For whom are the goods and services produced? people in the village who need them

9 Traditional Economy Examples: villages in Africa and South America
Inuit tribes in Canada

10 Command System Definition: government makes all economic decisions & owns most of the property

11 Command System Characteristics: governmental planning groups determine such things as the prices of goods/services & the wages of workers Most limit private property rights Individual freedoms limited This system has not been very successful & more and more countries are abandoning it.

12 Command Economy Who decides what to produce?
government makes all economic decisions Who decides how to produce goods and services? government decides how to make goods/services For whom are the goods and services produced? whomever the government decides to give them to

13 Command System countries with communist governments have command economies Examples: Cuba former Soviet Union North Korea *Germany and Russia have moved away from having a command economy since Now they have a mixed economy.

14 Market Economy Definition: an economic system in which economic decisions are guided by what is in the best interest of the individual A.k.a: Based on what the people want! And how much they’re willing to pay!

15 Market Economy Characteristics: most of the resources are owned by private citizens economic decisions are based on free enterprise (competition between companies) Features private ownership of resources

16 Market Economy Who decides what to produce?
businesses base decisions on supply and demand and free enterprise (PRICE) Who decides how to produce goods and services? businesses decide how to produce goods For whom are the goods and services produced? consumers
